A Prayer for Lent - Week 2

Our Father in heaven,

You are the Light of the world. You are our salvation. You dwell in unapproachable light, yet You have made a way in Jesus for us to approach You and we do so with joy today. We proclaim Your excellencies for You have called us out of darkness into Your marvelous light. You are awesome in all Your ways, full of grace and truth and justice and mercy. There is no other who deserves our worship and no other that we delight to worship. You alone are worthy.

According to Your perfect will, Lord, we want to make You known from our homes to the utter parts of the earth. We ask You to take away every basket that would hide Your light from a dark and sinful world for it is You who lights our lamps to show Your glory. By Your word, You are a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Guide us into a world that is desperate for You. Make Your name known among the nations through us. We thank You for the privilege of sharing the gospel and ask for You to open the eyes and hearts of the blind and unbelieving. Make us worthy ambassadors to proclaim Your wonders and mercies.

We know that You alone are the source of our strength. We are not ashamed of the gospel for we know it is Your power for salvation to all who believe and that in it You reveal Your righteousness. So Father, move our feet and open our mouths to share Your salvation and Your sufficiency in all things. We know that apart from You we can do nothing and that unless You work, all we do is in vain. We humbly ask that You go before us and move any obstacles that would keep Your light from breaking forth in our community, in our nation, and in the places You send us abroad. Expand Your kingdom through us, Your servants. Help us to shine in good works that others will see and give You glory. We recognize the harvest is plentiful and ask You, the Lord of the harvest, to send out laborers from among us. We plead for Your resources and ask that You give us this day what we need for You alone know.

Psalm 90:8 says that “You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence.” Nothing is hidden from You, Father. Even the darkness is as light with You. So rather than trying to hide our sins from You, we openly confess them to You for You know them already. We confess that often we can be cowards. Though we hate the darkness, we often find ourselves hiding in it. You are the stronghold of our lives, of whom shall we be afraid? You have promised that those that follow You will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. We believe You, Jesus. Instruct us in righteousness and cause us to walk in the light of Your word. Teach us to put aside all fear and anxiety and to live confidently in the sufficiency of Your grace. We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for Your own possession, called out of darkness into the light of Your kingdom, that we might proclaim Your many excellencies. Help us lift our drooping hands and strengthen our weak knees, make straight paths for our feet. If there is any division among us, bring peace and reconciliation for we know that we must love one another or we can’t say that we walk in Your light.

Our plea is that You would teach us to look beyond ourselves and to place others above ourselves. Help us to do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility to count others more significant than ourselves. Help us to look not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of others. Help us to submit to one another in love. Fill us with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Teach us to bear with one another and to forgive one another just as You have forgiven us. Let Your peace rule in our hearts and fill us with gratitude. We ask that Your word would dwell in us richly. Help us to boldly and lovingly teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in our hearts to You. Because You are the Light of the World, we desire to walk as children of light.

We specifically ask for Your protection and blessing over these that have committed to mission trips this year. Give them hearts of compassion, countenances that invite others to know You, words that encourage and admonish, courage to speak the gospel boldly, protection that they may boldly share unhindered, and humility to labor with the lovely and not so lovely. Sanctify them in the truth of Your word and deepen their faith. Let their light so shine that others will see their good works and glorify You for the same God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” is the same God who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Keep them blameless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, holding fast to the word of life. Go before them in power and prepare the soil of hearts before they arrive. Reap a harvest so marvelous that You alone are given glory, we pray.

And now, our Father, we shake ourselves awake and ask You to give us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Jesus, enlightening our hearts to know what is the hope of our calling, what are the riches of Your glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of Your power toward us who believe. We praise You, Father, for You have in Christ delivered our souls from death and have kept our feet from falling that we may walk before You in the light of life. Sent out Your light and Your truth, let them lead us; let them bring us to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling.

We pray this in the precious name of Jesus, the love and light of our lives.
Amen.
