A Prayer for Lent - Week 5

Our Father in heaven,

You are so good to us. Apart from Your goodness, we remain in darkness. In Your love and mercy, You sent Your Son to make a way for us. Jesus, You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life and we recognize that no one comes to the Father except through You. Because of the blood You shed for us, we have confidence to come to our Father through a new and living way. By Your torn flesh, You have opened for us a way to draw near to You with full assurance of faith, with hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and bodies washed with pure water. You are the way of salvation and we worship You and gladly follow You. We worship You in Spirit and in truth for You are Truth and Life to us.

It is our joy to be Your disciples. We want to see Your kingdom come in its fullness. Make Your way clear to us, Father, for we Your people want to be used of You. We want to see Your purposes fulfilled and Your will accomplished in our families, communities, and around the world. We want to see Your truth proclaimed in all nations and Your life offered to every person. Cause us to be a blessing, we pray.

Guide us, Lord, into all truth by Your Spirit and make us understand the many ways that we have turned aside from Your will. Sanctify us by Your truth – Your word is truth. Give us daily Your bread of life so we may walk according to Your way. Forgive us for trusting our own way and leaning on our own understanding. Help us to trust in You with whole hearts and to acknowledge You in all our ways. Make our paths straight, we plead. Grant that we may not be like children, tossed to and fro and carried about by every wind of doctrine. Rather, Father, grow us up in every way into Christ who is our head. We confess that we struggle to defeat the lies of the enemy. We desperately need Your truth. Help us to take every thought captive according to the obedience of Christ, examining each one according to the truth. Teach us to think on those things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy. Make Your will so clear that we may know with certainty that whatever teaching we hear is from You, to know the truth so that the truth might set us free indeed. It is by following Your way of truth that we experience life.

We ask You, Lord, to teach us Your way that we may walk in truth. Unite our hearts to fear Your name. You delight in truth in the inward being, and You teach us wisdom in the secret heart. Have Your way with our hearts, Lord. Shine Your light of truth on every dark part and compel Your love within us to repent of every evil or selfish motive. Search us, O God, and know our hearts. Try us and know our anxious thoughts. See if there is any evil way in us and lead us in the way everlasting.

Here at the Church at Martinsburg, we want to be a people of the word, people who live in truth and share the truth. We are a part of the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth, and we aspire to behave in a way worthy of that title. You, Lord, are near to all who call on You in truth. We trust that You are near to us. We thank You for the teachers that You have raised up to train our children. We ask that You continue to bless their service and to help them to see the fruit that You are producing through their labor. We thank You for our community group leaders and their faithfulness. For all of these we ask that You would continue to hold them steadfast in their pursuit of You, giving them a hunger, thirst, and love for truth that they might present themselves approved unto You, workers that have no need to be ashamed for they are rightly handling the word of truth. Raise up leaders and teachers from among us. Let them be men and women of the word.

Make us good Bereans who test the word we hear. Guard us from the tendency to only hear what sounds good to us. Help us to turn away from the triteness of the world and the enemy. Turn our ears away from words that would speak peace to our hearts when You would speak war with our sin. Turn our ears away from words of condemnation when You would speak peace. Help us to discern Your voice in the midst of thousands of other voices clamoring for our attention. Turn our attention to seek Your face and not the wisdom of Google. Turn our feet away from ways that lead to destruction for the way of the transgressor is hard and we want none of that. Turn our feet in the way of holiness and cause us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, walking worthily and in the perfect law of liberty.

You, Lord, are our only way. You alone are truth. In You alone is Life. We acknowledge that our ways are futile. We acknowledge that left to ourselves, we tell ourselves lies and rationalize our sins. We know that when we trust in ourselves, we sin to our own destruction. There is nothing this world or the enemy can offer us that will end well for in You and You alone is what is best for us. Speak truth to us, we pray, and speak it loud. Speak it to us as You have commanded us to teach it. Talk to us, Father, as we sit in Your house and in our own homes, as we walk by the way, as we lie down, and when we rise. Bind Your word on us as a sign on our hand. Make it as frontlets between our eyes. Thank You for writing Your word on our hearts – call it to our mind by the Spirit of truth and cause us to walk in obedience to You. We thank You for the great lengths You have gone to save us as well as to sanctify and sustain us. Teach us faithfulness. We praise You for Your everlasting covenant of grace with us.

It is in the name of Jesus we pray,
Amen.
