A Prayer for Lent - A Prayer for Good Friday
Our Father in Heaven,
This is eternal life, that we may know You and Your only Son whom You have sent. He is the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in Him, even if he dies, will live. We cannot even begin to fathom all of the implications of Christ our Resurrection. Blessed be You, Father, for according to Your great mercy, You have caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for us, who by Your power are being guarded through faith for a salvation that will be revealed. We can only begin to comprehend the depth of Your riches and wisdom and knowledge! How unsearchable are Your judgments and how inscrutable are Your ways! For from You and through You and to You are all things.
We thank You for all that You have provided in the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was delivered up for our trespasses, raised for our justification, and was declared to be the Son of God in power by His resurrection from the dead. He is alive and lives forevermore and has the keys of Death and Hades. He will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. We thank You that, as in Adam all died, so in Christ we are made alive. Thank You that we are once for all raised from the dead by Your glory so we may walk in newness of life, for Christ has become to us righteousness and wisdom and sanctification and redemption. We praise Your most holy name! Send us out, Lord, with the word of this grace that Your kingdom may grow to the praise of Your glory.
We confess that we often forget who You made us to be. How tragic, Lord Jesus, for if we have been united with You in Your death, we certainly are united with You in Your resurrection to a life filled with Your power. Forgive us for our weak faith. Help our unbelief. Fulfill in us every resolve for good and every work of faith by Your power. You began a good work in us, Father, and we know that You will complete it. You will not forsake the work of Your hands. You will fulfill Your purpose for us for Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Your grace is sufficient for us. Your power is perfected in our weakness so that where we are weak, we are made strong in You and in the strength of Your might. We say with Paul that we want to know You and the power of Your resurrection and the fellowship of Your sufferings. You have set us free from the penalty and power of sin. Forgive us when we don’t live that way. Empower us as we consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to You in Christ Jesus.
Help us to seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated, for we have been raised with Him. Set our minds on things above and take our focus off earthly things, for we have died and our lives are hidden with Christ in You. By faith today we put to death anything of Adam that may be found in us. We put to death sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, idolatry. We put away all anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene language, and lies. You have raised us to life and we are being renewed in knowledge after Your image. By faith we put on compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forbearance, forgiveness and love. Let Your peace rule in our hearts, Jesus, and grow in us hearts of thanksgiving. Let Your word dwell richly in us and teach us to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus with gratitude to You through Him.
For those who have not tasted the grace of Christ, we pray for their salvation. For those who have their 5 that they are praying and witnessing to – Father, You are mighty to save and we plead with You to bring salvation. Teach transgressors Your ways and let sinners return to You. Let the disobedient be turned to the wisdom of the just, and make ready a prepared people. Bring to life the dead for You are the Resurrection. Say to them, “Live!” for Your word is life. Open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified. Set the prisoners free, open the eyes of the blind, make the lame to walk, open the hearts of the unbelieving that they may believe. Father, take out of their flesh the heart of stone and give them a new heart of flesh. Circumcise their heart to love you. Put Your Spirit within them and cause them to walk in Your statutes. Grant them repentance and a knowledge of the truth that they may escape from the snare of the devil. We humbly pray that You open their hearts to believe the gospel.
You are able to keep us from stumbling and to present us blameless before the presence of Your glory with great joy, so to You, the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority before all time and now and forever. And to You, who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power – the resurrection power – at work within us, to You be glory in Your church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations.
We praise you and pray these things in the name of the Resurrected One, Jesus Christ,
