Habits of Grace

Hear his voice.
Have his ear.
Belong to his body.
Serve with his strength.
Rest in his work.

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” — 2 Peter 3:18

Our culture is drawn to the instant. The flashy. The monumental. But as biblical counselor Paul Tripp explains, our life is not made in one or two glorious moments, but is made up of the tens of thousands of seemingly mundane moments that transpire every day.

This summer I’m excited to study with you five simple and seemingly unexceptional means of grace that Jesus’ church has practiced for thousands of years to know him more deeply and experience his grace more fully.

  • Hearing from God’s Word

  • Speaking to God in Prayer
  • Joining alongside God’s people in fellowship
  • Serving with God’s strength in ministry
  • Resting in Jesus’ completed work in Sabbath

These are not one-time experiences to be abandoned at will, nor empty religious routines that will somehow earn God’s grace, but these are life-long pathways chosen by God to be the way for his church to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ as better worshippers and missionaries within our cities.

It’s my pleasure to announce we’ve invited pastors and church planters from all around the state that I deeply respect to come and invest in us throughout this series.

Together we will be hearing from:

  • Pastor Josh Tingler, Student Pastor, Independent Bible Church, Martinsburg, WV (Click to Listen
  • Mark Johnson, Lead Pastor, Independent Bible Church, Martinsburg, WV (Click to Listen)
  • Pastor Josh McClain, Assistant Pastor, Church at Martinsburg, Martinsburg, WV (Click to Listen
  • Pastor Will Basham, Lead Pastor, New Heights Church, Milton and Huntington, WV (Click to Listen)
  • Pastor Chris Priestley, Lead Pastor, Crossroads Church, Morgantown, WV (Click to Listen)

I’m praying 31 days of traveling these pathways together will create a well-worn path at the Church at Martinsburg to more richly experience the presence of God and more eagerly participate in the work of God for the rest of our lives.

“Keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.” — Jude 1:21

Until the Nets are Full,
Pastor Jacob

Recommended Resources:

In 2016 Desiring God released a book called Habits of Grace (from which we graciously stole the title of our sermon series and study). While this book does not cover all five of the habits we are exploring this summer, it is a work whole-heartedly recommended.

A 31-day study guide is also available that includes discussion questions for personal or community group use. We encourage you to get the book, get some friends, and work through the workbook together throughout the 31 days of this sermon series and study in Habits of Grace.

The eBook is available for free here and the accompanying study guide free here
