About Baptism
What Is Baptism
In the Old Testament, baptism means washing or cleansing. It was a ritual that symbolized purity. In the New Testament, it continued to have that meaning but another element was added. Baptism also became symbolic of death and resurrection. The immersion of the body under the water indicates death to an old way of life and the raising of the body out of the water indicates the resurrection to a new way of life as a follower of Christ.
Why baptism?
Jesus did it and taught it. (Matthew 3:13-17) It is a public display/confession of a personal decision to follow Christ.
Who should be baptized?
Those who have united with Christ and accepted his gift of grace by acknowledging Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. (Acts 2:38, 39)
How should we be baptized?
Biblical scholars and denominational leaders have different beliefs. Mainly the question is should a believer be sprinkled or immersed? The Church at Martinsburg holds to the literal meaning of baptism as described in the New Testament that indicates total immersion.
When should one be baptized?
We believe that one should be baptized upon his/her personal decision to become a Christ-follower. We believe that one must be accountable and mature enough to understand the basics of the gospel before being baptized.
What do I do after I’m baptized?
Begin to enjoy your new life in Christ. (Romans 6:3-4,11) Devote yourself daily to being a Christ-follower. Read the Bible to see what it means to live like Christ. Learn to worship and pray. Get involved in a group and individual Bible study. Find a place to serve in the church. Invite your friends to be a part of the Christian life.
